1. Stop the self-pity. Stop the blaming. Stop the justifying. We all have problems. You are not alone. We can look at our lives as, “oh, poor me; I’m not where I should be.” We can blame everybody around us. We can justify why our life sucks by saying things like, “if this hadn’t happened, I’d be…” or “I’m not successful because…” It is time to stop the pity and take responsibility for your life.
2. Be honest with yourself. This is so important because you will not achieve one goal without honesty. These are the types of questions to ask yourself:
• Would I rather have my finances in order making my life easier or would I rather go shopping when I feel down, have expensive coffee every morning, and spend my hard earned money on other people so I can look like a big shot?
• Would I rather feel good about myself by being fit, healthy and energetic or would I rather binge on junk food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spend hours in front of the TV and stay chubby because that is what others expect of me?
If you enjoy the chaos of juggling your money to pay bills and you enjoy your television programs and junk food, than keep it up, but still love and accept yourself for who you are.
3. List your desires. Write down what you really want in your life. This is a powerful exercise. But remember, you are not writing down your mother’s dream for you, or your husband’s desires or even what your girlfriends think you should do with your life; this is about you and what you want. So, what do you want your life to look like realistically? Write it down. Now, if you could dream big, huge, what would your life look like? 4. Now you have stopped the pity party, you have gotten real with yourself and you have a clear idea of what you want your life to look like. Exciting isn’t it? Now you are going to list the goals that will help you achieve your dream. For example, on your list of desires you wrote that you want to be ten pounds lighter. Where do you start? Maybe you used to enjoy working out to a DVD every morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but your living room has become so cluttered that there is no room for you to exercise. Then one of your goals will be to clean and rearrange your living room so you have the room you need to exercise.
5. Make a list of possible obstacles. It is very possible that you have set similar goals before. One thing that happens when we want to change our lives is that we run into barriers that we did not think about. These barriers will stop us form attaining our goals if we do not prepare ourselves. So write down your possible obstacles. For example, you are exercising every morning in your clean, rearranged living room and suddenly you are required to travel for work. Now what? You know that the hotel room will not have a DVD player; you are not even sure the hotel will have a gym. These are the types of problems you will face, so be ready. Do not let anything stop you from what you want. Being prepared in life will take you a long way.
6. Back to your list of goals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is now time to break your goals down into achievable tasks. This is so fun, and it will make each goal feel within reach. For example, your goal is to pay off all of your credit card debt. Breaking this down might look like this:
• Use the internet to investigate financial expert advice and create a workable plan.

• Start doing freelance computer work to create extra income.

The feeling, experience, and effect you get while in this stillness doesn’t stop when you stop the exercise, it’s carried forward into your day. The more often you practice stillness and feel the awareness you find there, the easier it is for you to BE there even while you’re active. The more you go there the easier it becomes to sustain this feeling, or to remember it when you need to. And if you’re transmitting this kind of vibration to the Universe, you get what?
If you did this exercise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you likely felt something similar to the film screen of your mind - so active for the one minute - going blank. You likely felt a genuine pause in thought, meaning a genuine absence of thinking. Whether the pause lasted a few seconds or longer, that was stillness. And you can return to that place anytime now that you know how to.
Then there’s the sabotaging belief that a spiritual or awakened person should have no issues in their life, that they should be able to control absolutely everything (and everyone) around them. Life doesn’t work this way for anyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because life happens and shifts spontaneously, for the most part. Awareness helps us be prepared; it is our armor. The complete elimination of all issues and challenges and emotional expression is not supposed to be the result of spirituality or awareness. The ability to maintain or more quickly return to inner peace is, and is a reward of awareness. It’s like that quote, “Before enlightenment: chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment: chop wood, carry water.” We sabotage ourselves with the belief that it’s life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is supposed to be transformed through our spiritual practices. Ego wants to put the cart before the horse; and the only way that’ll work is if the horse pushes the cart. It’s like using a push-mower instead of a riding-mower: We push when we could ride. Sound familiar? Sabotaging expectations cause us to push against life when we could ride.
Kinslow went on to quote Tony Parson’s from his book, Invitation to Awaken: “We should drop any fixed ideas we have about enlightenment, such as the illusory belief that it brings total goodness, bliss, and purity. Life simply goes on. Occasionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I may get angry, feel anxiety…. When the contraction passes, I quickly return to an all-encompassing acceptance in which the sense of separateness drops away.” Both men’s words are ones we do best to allow for ourselves and others because we humans have emotional contractions from time to time, when stuff happens; and, it would make life far more pleasant if we realized we’ve held illusory beliefs about being authentic and/or spiritual, for ourselves and for others.

The way to touch authenticity and awareness is the same: Touch inner stillness. That stillness is where everything comes from,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including you. Sleep is the great healer. It’s a time when you are at rest, are in a state of inner and outer stillness. But you want to practice stillness while awake so you experience those healing and restorative benefits then as well. And the more you do this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more stillness will stay with you even as you move through your day. But, and this is important, you allow the stillness to stay with you by being aware of it, noticing it; you don’t demand that it stay or that you hang onto it. That’s ego-mind. Stillness and the awareness that arises from it is a relaxed inner state of being.
The way to greater authenticity and awareness is to lighten up. By this I mean, instead of trying to increase these by adding more beliefs or rituals, aim to have fewer, and even fewer, until stillness bathed in awareness is what you experience. What’s left if you remove beliefs? Awareness. What’s left if you remove shoulds? Who you really are. What’s left if you remove compulsive thinking and doing? Stillness. Stillness is the pool of calm, infinite potential where ideas spring forth into experience. Stillness is serene. Stillness is where awareness lives. Awareness guides your actions better than thinking ever will.
You want to feel and be authentic and spiritual or enlightened. But do you sabotage yourself by attaching unrealistic and unfair expectations? Probably so, if you’re like the rest of us. And this is one reason the path can be so challenging.
Then there’s the sabotage form of “Fake it till you make it;” and my question about that is How’s that worked out for you? Are you absolutely sure you know what it means? If you want prosperity like someone else has, what does “Fake it till you make it” mean to you? Does it mean you alter your appearance (not because you want to but because it’s part of your faking-it act)? Do you walk a certain way, spend more than you have? And, how authentic do you feel if you fake something about yourself you don’t actually believe is or know really isn’t you? You can reveal to yourself what is really you, and live it – like knowing whether you prefer your coffee with cream or black rather than what someone might expect you to like or you think will make them like you. Sure, you might benefit from tweaks here and there, but you’ll never be comfortable in your own skin if you wear a cloak of many aspects or expectations of others over you and your life. Dress a dog in a butterfly costume and the dog will still be itself, and be happy about it. The dog won’t get confused.
Frank Kinslow wrote in his book, The Secret of Quantum Living, “The Self-aware love to eat, make love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], earn money, drive cars, play practical jokes, and watch television. In short, they’re just like the unaware with this simple and succinct difference: they’re totally accepting of life just as it is.” In other words, the aware are just like everyone else, have the same experiences as everyone else, except they suffer less because of their awareness that also allows their authenticity.

Yes, through awareness we improve and life follows our example – or more precisely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our energy; but the primary improvement is more about how we release ourselves and others and life from expectations. What-is doesn’t cause as much suffering for us if we release expectations. I know that goes against the grain of some teachings that say we should expect, but consider this: There is a big difference between ego-based expectations and spiritual trust. Ego is only satisfied (temporarily) when its particular (and often limited) desire is fulfilled. Spirit that trusts appreciates the amazing and often surprising fulfillments that happen based on a general desired experience.
I don’t want to just discuss stillness and not give you a way to feel it. So I’m going to share Kinslow’s quick and easy method so you can have a nice taste of stillness and what he calls pure awareness. Read the rest of this paragraph then return to this point. Close your eyes and notice your thoughts without getting involved with them. Just notice them. Do this for about one minute. Then, like a cat watching a mouse hole, ask yourself this question: “Where will my next thought come from?” If you’re able to, stop reading and do this now, before you continue.
This sabotaging expectation insists that someone who travels the spiritual path should be transformed (and even as soon as they begin it), but according to whose parameters? If a spirituality-minded person used the “eff” word prior to awareness, s/he may still use it after awareness, though it may be with conscious deliberateness (and humor) rather than like an unconscious Pez dispenser of profanity. If the person drank coffee or smoked cigars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or had a quiet disposition or a rowdy one, they’ll likely do and be the same after they begin their spiritual practice or even after enlightenment. What’s more authentic: being who you are or putting on an act? We put on an act because we’re aware of the Great Expectations and are afraid to be really authentically who we are, which will likely not match up to such expectations – and won’t we be embarrassed! Well, only until we embrace being self-realized.
Years back a friend and I had watched several minutes of a Wayne Dyer special on PBS, when my friend said, “Sure, he’s saying all this stuff, but if his assistant screwed something up, you can bet he’d get peeved” (only he didn’t say peeved). And therein hides in plain sight the formula for imposed self-sabotage and imposed sabotage on others, and them on us.
You’re probably aware of having imposed the expectation of saintly behavior or perfection on yourself or others. Any one of us will shift something about ourselves as soon as we decide to, awakened or spiritual or not. If we do a shift because of an expectation or to demonstrate we’re spiritual or enlightened, that’s allowing opinion to control us, not authenticity.
Perhaps our general ego-based discontent and shared experience of not always feeling authentic in our life and our spirituality is what led us to place an expectation on ourselves and anyone seeking or living a more spirituality-based life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of having to be, as Kinslow also wrote, saint-like. The Bible says we will know each other by our “fruit”. But that’s not usually what we focus on foremost, in us or others. There’s the expectation that a spirituality-minded person should not only be saintly, but must match our ideal image of what that should look and be like… the same image of what’s ideal that we’ve convinced ourselves has to be true for us. There are 7 billion of us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though not all are concerned with such matters, but that still leaves a lot of interpretations of what that ideal is. Since we and others fall short of that unrealistic, demanding ideal, we wallow in judgment instead of being curious about others and primarily concerned with our own evolution and practices.
Open to the stillness that gently places you like a feather on a soft breeze into awareness. The stillness, that awareness within, knows and loves you unconditionally - because it is you - the real you AND the Ultimate Awareness Consciousness which you are and is you. I’m not saying to ignore what you believe or know about you or your life that would benefit from a shift, but to give yourself this gift of doing less to experience and feel more. You don’t do a lot of things to get to stillness; you go there by releasing anything that isn’t stillness, which is why Kinslow’s question is so effective. Watch how this stillness-to-awareness practice transforms you first and then your life, how it allows you to be authentic with yourself and your spirituality. Stop sabotaging your very personal spirituality experience and authenticity, and enjoy it. It’s a good practice, one you’ll appreciate.

Sabotage wants to put someone (or us) on a “pedestal” instead of appreciating them just as they are and may become, and what they offer (their fruit vs. their leaves and flowers). The moment they (or we) do something that indicates they’re human – well, some of us breathe a sigh of relief (“They really are like us.”), while others, like my friend did, discount every good thing someone does because the person is still human, not superhuman.

Children - teach them about God and goodness; love and accept them unconditionally for who and how they are; discover their unique nature and gift; acknowledge and respect them as individuals, be the best teacher and guide I can possibly be; be a good example; teach them healthy morals and values; teach them to take responsibility for all their actions and outcomes; teach them how to make good choices and decisions, teach them about consequences; teach them how to create a life of their own design; keep a 24 hour open line of communication; be patient.
This sample list may or may not match the kind of person you are today. Putting that aside, you will notice that material possessions and finances are not listed. This is because when you are doing everything you know how to do to keep your relationship with God and your Self strong, healthy and true, then you will have plenty of work. And, because you do your work so well with your have highly developed skills and talents, you will be in high demand giving you the corresponding income to buy the possessions you desire.
Begin your list by first taking a few moments to think of what is the one thing you value more than anything else in the world and then write it on the top of a page. Continue with the second thing you value most, and write it below the first one. Continue listing what you value most in order of importance. When your list is done, you have before you your hierarchy of what is most important to you in life. For example:
These kinds of lists can be made between you and anybody else such as business partners, employees and children. Parents and children making a list with the title "What It Takes To Have And Maintain A Healthy, Loving And Open Relationship" may find it to be a real eye opener when the most important thing for a parent is to have "open communication," yet for the child it is having "total privacy." As long as each person participating in this exercise is willing to be flexible and work together the outcome is more than likely going to be very positive.
Body - maintain health or do whatever is necessary to return to health; exercise and maintain a healthy weight; sleep as much as is needed for my body; be conscious not to abuse drugs or alcohol; eliminate negative or harmful habits.
Pets and Plants - love, respect and appreciate them and their existence; be sensitive to their needs; provide them with the proper care for maximum health; spend time with them; have fun.
Note: It would be interesting to see how your Checklist for Success compares to that of your Significant Other. If they are the same,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you may have a match made in heaven. If they are slightly different, then you may each agree to modify your lists in order for them to match. This could be taken as a sort of written agreement between the two of you that basically states you will go through life together valuing the same things. If your lists are totally different and there is no desire to make any modifications in order to make a closer match, then you may want to reconsider how Significant the Other really is.
There are many ways to stay on track with your goals and keep moving towards creating the life of your own design. Making a list of what you value most in life, and then being true to those things you value,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is one of the best ways to get you from where you are to where you want to be. This list becomes a Checklist for Success!
Family and Friends - stay connected; address unresolved issues whenever necessary and appropriate; do not enable unresourceful behaviors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; be honest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; forgive and allow to be forgiven; make amends if necessary; lend a helping hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; be available; be supportive; encourage positive change when ever necessary; spend time together; remember their birthdays and special occasions; be there for them during tough times.
Self - Be the best me I can possibly be by putting conscious effort into keeping healthy in:

Your Checklist for Success is a great way to set goals as well. Whenever you discover that you are not doing something that would surely improve how you relate to one of the persons or things on the list,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then make it a goal for you to reach. Your life will only move forward, and in a very positive manner.
Next, write down everything you need to do in order to be true to each of the things you value. For example: God - Create and/or maintain a strong relationship with God by doing good things such as solving problems instead of creating them; serve humanity through my work and/or life; do onto others as I would like to have done onto me; meditate and/or pray daily; be grateful for all the goodness in my life as well as for the challenges that help me grow and learn; and be more charitable.
Significant Other - Love and accept my Significant Other for who and how they are; have fun and laugh a lot with them; be affectionate and share a lot of physical, loving contact; be a source of emotional support; keep the spontaneity and passion alive; be available; be sensitive to their needs; be totally honest, maintain clear lines of communication; always be best friends.

4. Forgive yourself and forgive your past. Sometimes our self-sabotage is a way to punish ourselves for something that we have done or that was done to us. What matters is who you are NOW, in this very moment. If you are taking the time to read this, I know you are worthy and deserving of all the best life has to offer—it is your birthright!
1. Go back to our prison metaphor—what is a common coping skill used by someone who is incarcerated? Prisoners are known to get a calendar and cross off each day until they regain their freedom—their release date. When you are attempting to change a habit, work ethic, belief,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], negative thinking—whatever it may be, cross off each calendar day that you have stayed the new course. At the end of 21 days do something special for you to celebrate the occasion.
The unconscious (John Bradshaw referred to it as the inner child) has a stake in maintaining the past. Scientifically, we know that all parts of our mind/body strive for balance (homeostasis). Mind and body constantly adjust themselves to our life script to find that balance. New thoughts or new behaviors mean more work for all parts of our existence and that means moving out of our comfort zone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and into temporary insecurity. The unconscious (like a small child) does not like to feel insecure or uncomfortable, so it makes its demands to live as it has always lived and to continue replaying its old tapes or reciting its old scripts. It throws an internal temper tantrum and creates what appear to be very good rationalizations for procrastination, or even complete abandonment of the change we want to make. However, the rationalizations are like the magician’s smoke and mirrors; they are only illusions created by the unconscious to keep homeostasis in our mind and in our life. Once the illusions fade, we once again face the frustration of repeating the harmful thoughts and actions that keep us in the bondage of the past.
What do we do? The unconscious is a powerful foe. Throughout its years of living inside of us, it develops tactics that cause self-sabotage in the best of us. We have all tried affirmations and New Year’s resolutions, but they begin to fade and lose their appeal after a week or two. Most of us just do not have the self-discipline to make them a new habit. The unconscious saboteur presents its array of rationalizations; our good intentions end; and we say to ourselves “I just can’t do it” or “It’s just not meant to be”. We buy into the trickery of the unconscious mind and our life returns to the way it has always been.
2. Enlist the help of a good friend and ask them to help you with accountability. In essence, they become your life coach. You check in with them on a daily basis and if you have followed through with discipline and consistency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you win their praise. If you have experienced a setback,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ask them to encourage you to try again and to keep you motivated for the 21-day period.
3 weeks does not seem like a long period of time when we talk about it in generalities, however, when we commit to discipline and consistency for a 3-week period, it can seem like an eternity. Not only are we fighting a battle for change, we are also waging a war with our unconscious. We need to be smarter and more disciplined than our unconscious saboteur is.
3. Use a form of cognitive therapy to re-frame your goal. For example—instead of seeing your transformation as hard work, focus on the positive results you will achieve. Let your mind envision the new and improved you. Then allow yourself to feel the pride and confidence you possess because you made the shift or change in your life.
Are You DOING Life, or Are You Doing LIFE?
On many occasions, the way we live life gets in the way of our experience and enjoyment of life we long to live. Psychology tells us that the unconscious mind controls 90-95% of our behaviors and thoughts. We are captives of our past and at times, we may find it impossible to move beyond the old tapes that are continuously recycling in our unconscious mind. We are stuck—we are fearful—we are lazy. We may consciously despise the situation we are in, but feel powerless to change it; and then we berate ourselves for not having the self-discipline to make the change that in turn, would create a shift in our life experience. We become our own worst enemy--the perpetrator and the victim of our personal human condition. Wow! What a way to live. It sounds like a death sentence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doesn’t it?

Okay—I apologize for that paragraph of negativity. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I wanted to grab your attention. The reason I wanted your attention is because we all share, in one form or another, this problem. None of us is immune to the devastating tapes trapped in our unconscious mind—but the good news is that we can learn to ignore those tapes, move past the fears, overcome the ambivalence or laziness, and CHANGE. Here is a quick overview of why old habits and patterns keep coming back and how to move beyond the harmful past behavior and into the positive present.
Research, first presented in the book Psycho-Cybernetics (Maltz, 1960 and 2001, tells us that it takes about 21 days to initiate change within the human psyche and within the cellular memory-banks of mind/body. This means that if you want to change your lifestyle or eliminate a bad habit, and you CONSISTENTLY behave, think, or react in a new way for a period of three weeks, you will be well on your way to creating new life-paths of health, happiness, or well-being. Since 1960 many health, psychological,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hypnosis, business, and military programs have built their formats for success around that 21-day rule. 5. Act as if the shift has already occurred. Speak of yourself as having made the shift or change. Talk about what you are doing and how you are doing it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Make yourself accountable to the follow through! Offer your support to others who might want to follow your example.
It all depends where you place the emphasis on the words to grasp the meaning of this repeated title. Ask yourself--are you both the prisoner and the jailer of your days? Or, do you allow yourself the freedom to consciously design and live your life to your ideal expectations? I do not know if you have thought about your life in those terms, but there is a very fine line between self-imprisonment and freedom. Sometimes, just doing one thing different or reframing a thought about a situation can make a huge impact for the better in your life.
Another way of phrasing this would be to ask if you are the ‘cause and effect’ of your daily activities, or do you continue in your same old routine—not really feeling happy—perhaps feeling miserable—but for certain, feeling incapable of making any positive shifts or adjustments. If your answer is the latter— then by default, you are still the cause and effect of your experiences; it is just not cause and effect in a GOOD way. Just as ‘deciding not to make a decision’ is a decision in itself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], taking no action, or repeating the same harmful action is really an action in and of itself. Maybe it helps your understanding to think about it in the terms of this old adage: “If you always do what you always did—you’ll always get what you always got”.

Many Koreans enjoy chicken ginseng soup or samgyetang on three special summer days -- Chobok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jungbok and Malbok that are said to be the hottest days of the year. Over training occurs when a muscle group is worked too long, or too frequent. Training a muscle before it has fully recuperated will cause further damage to the muscle fibers. The body will enter into a catabolic state (breaking down) and will result in loss of muscle tissue. The body in its inability to adapt to this stress will show signs of over training.
When it comes to increasing exercise performance and improving body compositiuon, there nothing more powerful than rest.
The following symptoms are good indications you are over training. They are lack of energy, trouble sleeping,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], muscle and joint soreness, no muscle growth, loss of strength and no desire to exercise. If these symptoms occur, the best course of action is rest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a week with no training. During this time off re-evaluate your nutritional program and training routine. After further analysis you will find you either under ate, or over trained.
During intense resistance training there is cellular damage that takes place in the millions of myofibrils,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that make up our muscle structure. As we recuperate from our workout, the hypertrophic or rebuilding response starts to occur. The rebuilding phase, has several stages and requires on average of 72-96 hours to complete.
